As government influence over the bishops increases, “the integrity of the Catholic faith will suffer.” To “assure the survival of China’s Church,” new bishops have been “secretly consecrated.” The bishop says the faithful question Rome’s genuine concern for their “spiritual well-being” when the Holy See approves government-selected bishops whom they regard as too reliable to the state. Rev. Michael Pfleger, 77, was reinstated effective August 24 after the Archdiocese of Chicago's Independent Review Board completed its investigation. He is known nationally for his progressive activism. Cardinal Blase Cupich, 77, said the board, assisted by the Office of Child Protection and outside investigators, concluded there was “no reason to believe” Pfleger was guilty of the allegation. Cupich accepted the recommendation and returned him to ministry at St. Sabina.
