"FSSPX Confessions Are Valid" - Müller Contradicts Tucho: On July 6, K-TV asked Cardinal Gerhard Müller whether confessions heard by priests of the Priestly Society of Saint Pius X are valid or invalid. Contrary to Cardinal Tucho Fernández, he replied: "The confessions are valid, but illicit. The power to forgive or retain sins is conferred through the sacrament of Holy Orders. Its exercise can only be restricted by the bishop or the Pope, as provided by canon law."

The episcopal consecrations by the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X in Écône on July 1 have revived an old question: how many Catholics are attached to the FSSPX? The answer is surprisingly elusive. Depending on the source, estimates range from around 100,000 to as many as 600,000 faithful worldwide. The FSSPX itself continues to publish the figure of 600,000 faithful. However, the number of 600,000 comes from a speech delivered in 2007 by Cardinal Darío Castrillón Hoyos, then President of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei. Speaking to the Latin American bishops at Aparecida, he stated that the "Lefebvrian group" consisted of four bishops, 500 priests and 600,000 faithful. The number is difficult to reconcile with the FSSPX’s infrastructure. The FSSPX has approximately 730 priests, about 180 priories and houses, and 750 chapels and Mass centres. I know in my Church it's packed during the three Masses held in the morning. And then there is one at night. Usually about half full. You will see people standing during the day. There is a nursing room also with mothers and small children as well as in the Vestibule. And also sometimes in a side room. It holds about 1,000 people or so I believe. We have 7 SSPX Church's in Florida. I would say, and would like to believe that there is at least 600,000 SSPX supporters and attendees.

Worse than Germany: Archbishop Erio Castellucci of Modena-Nonantola has proposed a form of liturgical "co-presidency" in which women would lead the Liturgy of the Word while priests would preside over the Eucharistic consecration.
