Three Catholic dioceses in northern England have proposed merging into one amid declining numbers. Bishop Marcus Stock has submitted a report to Pope Leo XIV recommending the unification of Leeds, Middlesbrough and Hallam, which together serve approximately 496,000 Catholics in 193 parishes. Monsignor Stock, Bishop of Leeds since 2014, also serves as Apostolic Administrator of Middlesbrough and Hallam. The recommendation follows an extensive consultation involving priests, deacons, religious communities, lay Catholics, diocesan councils, trustees and Catholic schools. Nine in-person meetings were held, and an online questionnaire received 840 responses. The consultation found broad support among clergy and openness among lay Catholics to unification, provided local identities are respected. Bishop Beat Grögli of St. Gallen, Switzerland, has defended the practice of women delivering homilies at Mass, although canon law defines the homily as an inherent part of the liturgy. Kath.ch reported on October 8 that Bishop Grögli told a group of women that this prohibited practice had existed in his diocese for nearly 50 years. He suggested that reversing the practice would be incomprehensible.
